Box of Matter is a monthly subscription box that delivers “a monthly collection of some of the most interesting pieces of the universe.” Each box contains an assortment of 4-6 materials, objects, specimens, or artifacts, like a museum or science lab experiment delivered right to your doorstep, with a value of around $50 per box.

Box of Matter is a monthly subscription box, and there are no customization options or box variations that you can select when subscribing.
Because they source rare and limited-quantity materials, the number of subscribers is capped. If you would like to subscribe, you will need to put your name on the waiting list and wait for an email letting you know that new subscriber slots have opened up. In our case, we were able to subscribe in the next available wave of openings, which is much better than we had initially feared. The delay only set us back one month.
Cost of Subscription
A Box of Matter subscription costs:
- $44.95 per month for monthly billing
- $39.98 per month for a 3-month subscription
- $34.99 per month for a 6-month subscription
- $29.99 per month for a 12-month subscription
All subscriptions renew automatically for the same term as your original subscription. For example, a 3-month subscription will roll over into another 3-month subscription.
As you can see, you save $14.96/month or $179.52/year by committing to a full year of boxes. That is a generous discount of 33%, very competitive as far as subscription boxes go. So if you can afford it, make sure to sign up for a 12-month subscription!
They also offer educator discounts, so be sure to let them know if you are a teacher or school!
International shipping costs $25 per box for Japan, which is on the steeper side for international shipping. So the total cost of an annual subscription (billed annually) shipped to Tokyo is $659.90, or $54.99 per box. This slightly exceeds the estimated retail value of $50 per box, but $4.99 is not bad as a curation premium for this very special box. So the price is acceptable, assuming you love the concept as much as we do!
U.S. shipping costs $3 per box.

Damaged Items & Refund Policy
Box of Matter does not maintain a clear damage resolution policy. Fortunately, I haven’t yet had to deal with any damaged items. But let us know in the comments if you have an experience to share!

The subscription ships in a compact branded box that directly holds the items. Hooray for low-waste packaging design!
The box is plain on the inside, but the color wraps all the way around and lends polish to the design.
The items are cushioned with foam, and informational cards in a slick design provide interesting factoids that educate and stimulate further research and exploration. The cards are durable and packed with information, and they are designed to be filed as part of your collection of science curios.
Packaging Rating: 5/5. Low-waste design. Cute branding. Polished shipping box and matching informational cards.
After subscribing, you will receive a welcome email.
Box of Matter uses the Cratejoy platform with a branded UI for subscription management. So the website is both user-friendly and transparent about your subscription details. For example, you can log into your customer dashboard at any time to review your billing information, address, and renewal date. You can even change your shipping address, subscription term, or payment information without contacting customer service.
They also run a referral program that provides a free box for every 3 friends referred. This is pretty generous for a subscription box!
Customer Experience Rating: 5/5. Can edit current subscription online. Great UI. Generous referral program.
There are no questions about allergies during the subscription sign-up process, nor does the website contain information on requesting allergy accommodations. So we don’t know if they will accommodate allergies.
If you have reported an allergy, give a shout in the comments below about whether and how they accommodated you!
Allergy Friendliness Rating: 2/5. No clear process for requesting accommodations. No information about whether change requests will be granted.
Other Accessibility Issues
Expat Box Life aims to provide reviews that cover accessibility issues for health needs, dietary preferences, and disabilities.

Box of Matter focuses on introducing its subscribers to curious bits of the universe. As such, they do not advertise any charitable giving programs in connection with its subscriptions. However, they do offer educator discounts, which is a nice gesture.
